The Burden That Was Never Yours

There was once a man who lived near a river and earned his living by ferrying people across it.

Every morning, he lifted his boat onto his shoulders, walked a long distance to the river, worked all day, and carried it back home again.

People admired his strength and dedication.

One day, a traveler watched him carefully and asked,
“Why do you carry the boat all the way back home every evening?”

The man replied,
“What if someone needs it at night? What if something happens? It’s my responsibility.”

The traveler gently smiled and said,
“The boat is meant to carry people across the river
not to be carried on your shoulders all the time.”

The man froze.

He realized he had been exhausting himself, not because life demanded it—but because he assumed responsibility where none existed

Dear Readers,

In our human life, we all carry responsibilities.
Every single day.

Some we carry with love.
Some with silent complaints.
Some with grace.
Some with boredom.

And some… without even questioning why we are carrying them.

But here’s the truth we rarely pause to see:
Many of the burdens we carry are unnecessary.

Not because responsibilities are wrong—
but because we often carry what was never ours to carry.

And when these unnecessary burdens repeat every day,
they don’t just consume our time— they quietly consume our life.

The Burdens We Carry Unnecessarily

Just like the man and the boat, we often carry:

We tell ourselves:
“If I don’t carry this, who will?”
“If I don’t worry, something will go wrong.”
“If I don’t handle this, I’m irresponsible.”

But responsibility has a boundary.

There are things we can influence and things we must release.

When we confuse the two, life becomes heavy.

How to Differentiate What’s Yours and What’s Not

Ask yourself gently:

  • Is this within my control?

  • Is this truly my responsibility, or am I assuming it?

  • Am I acting from care, or from fear?

  • If I put this down, will something truly collapse—or will I finally breathe?

Responsibility that is yours gives a sense of meaning—even when it’s tiring.
Responsibility that is not yours creates constant exhaustion and resentment.

Your body already knows the difference.

A Gentle Reminder

You are meant to live, not just carry.

Some burdens are part of your growth.
Some are lessons in letting go.

Wisdom is not about carrying more. Wisdom is about knowing what to carry and what to leave behind.

When you release what was never yours, you don’t become careless—
you become free, present, and truly responsible for the life that is yours
